Beracha for Cholent

What’s the bracha for CHOLENT? Also, after bracha?

Answer:

This depends on the ingredients.

If there is wheat or barley in the cholent, the beracha is mezonos. If not, we follow the majority ingredient – usually potatoes.

However, this is contingent on the fact that the cholent is well mixed. If pieces are separate and well defined, it is best to make a number of berachos – one for potatoes, one for meat, etc. This is done after the individual ingredients are separated from one another.

For the after berachah, this will be “borei nefashos,” unless one eats sufficient barley (or other mezonos) to warrant “al hamichya” (a kezayis) in a sufficiently short time period (approx. four minutes). This depends on the type of cholent.

Best wishes.
