Charity for Buying Apartment

In Israel it’s common practice that the parents of a chosson and kallah buy an apartment for the couple (or at least pay for part of it then have the couple pay the rest in form of a mortgage.) Often times the amount that the parents have to pay is in the $10,000s+ money that money here certainly don’t have.

Even though the father(s) and even the chosson are healthy, able-bodied individuals, they often refuse to work for any of the money that might be needed for the purpose of purchasing the dira and will result to going to collect, often in chutz l’aretz. In terms of dinei tzedeka, is this considered tzedeka? Most of these people are often put into their situations by choice, refusing not to work because they realize they could simply get the money from wealthy hardworking Jews in chutz l’aretz.

Answer:

Although it is wholly improper that a father should have to collect money to purchase an apartment for his children, if this is the case, meaning that he would not be able to “marry off” his children without providing them with something towards an apartment, then this is certainly tzedakah.

We are often rightly upset by certain social practices that are improper. Yet, the individual who is part of the system can often be a “victim” of the system, and as an individual he needs our support.

Best wishes.
