Is it considered Beged Ish for a man (brother, father, husband) to drape his suit jacket over his cold sister, daughter, wife, etc? Does it make a difference if she puts her arms through the sleeves or wears it draped over her shoulders, and does it matter if it’s day or night?
Answer:
It is permitted to drape a jacket over a woman for purposes of keeping her warm.
The prohibition applies specifically to “cross-dressing” – a man wearing a woman’s garment and vice versa.
The Rema (concerning dressing up on Purim) writes that where there is no intention the prohibition does not apply, and although many dispute his ruling concerning fancy dress on Purim, this applies where a man dresses up as a woman and not to a single item of men’s clothing draped over a woman to keep her from the cold.
