The Mishna Brura 300:2 recommends making melave malka close to Shabbos as possible, this is also the opinion of the Yaavetz in his commentary on the Siddur. However, even according to them it may be fulfilled for the duration of the night. See Aishel Avraham O:C 174:4 who states so explicitly. In fact there are some Chassidic Courts who customarily have Melave Malka after chatzos. This is ht minhag of Skver chasidm, specifically on the first night of selichos, they have melave malka after selichos.
