Drinking Wine by a Bread Meal

Question:

If one drinks wine during a bread meal in order to help the bread (or matza) go down more easily, is he exempt from making a hagofen? (Really, if one drinks wine or grape juice during a meal, he is required to make a hagofen, but it could be that in this case the wine is tofel to the pas, though if later during the meal, one drinks wine by itself, he should seemingly make a hagofen? Or do we say that once it’s tofel, it continues to be tofel, even if he now desires to drink wine by itself?

Answer:

A bracha would be required for the wine. The only drink which is exempt from a bracha when be used to wash down food is water, which only requires a bracha when one drinks it for thirst, as it lacks the pleasure of flavor which other food and drink have. Wine however provides pleasure of it’s flavor which is independent of washing down the food and so always requires a bracha.

Water or any tafel is only secondary for that very consumption, but any other consumption even in the same meal would require a bracha.

  1. “Water or any tafel is only secondary for that very consumption, but any other consumption even in the same meal would require a bracha.”

But if one eats cereal w/ milk, he blesses only on the cereal. And if milk is left over afterwards (and will be consumed separately), he drinks it without blessing.

    1. that is only if it a small amount, and then it is considered part of that very same consumption
