Tefilin at Auschwitz

Question:

I noticed on the March of the Living that a certain group of chassidim were putting tefillin on the young men within the gates of Auschwitz. They were also singing Siman Tov and Mazal Tov. I know that because of “loeg l’rash” we don’t put on tefiliin in a cemetery. My question is if Auschwitz itself is considered a cemetery and is it allowed there.

Answer:

As far as I know the concentration camp itself was a place that many got killed, but they weren’t buried there. If there aren’t dead people actually there it is permitted.
