Question:
Is there any particular Mitzvah to sleep in the Sukkah on Sukkot? If so, how can one be Mekayem the Mitzvah if by sleeping, one is not even aware of what one is doing at all? Thank you.
Answer:
Yes, part of the mitzvah of Succah is to sleep in it. The Succah is the place that we live during the Yom Tov of Succos, and sleeping is part of the way we live in our homes. Although it is true that when a person sleeps he is technically exempt from the mitzvah, because he doesn’t have daas then, however we fulfill the mitzvah by going to sleep. By going to sleep in the succah we are making the succah our home. Aside from this, when a person does a mitzvah that started from before he was sleeping and it continues while he is sleeping he is still considered fulfilling the mitzvah, even though he is sleeping (as when a person wears tzitzis while sleeping during the daytime).
