Receiving Workplace Gifts during the Year of Mourning for a Parent

Question:

My place of work recently had an event which I couldn’t attend, where they gave a gift to all their employees. I’ve now been informed that the gift is waiting for me to pick up. Am I allowed to receive this gift during the year of aveilus for a parent (e.g., is it considered a gift or part of my wages)? Also am I allowed to accept the mishloach manos that they send to their employees, or should I tell them in advance not to include me on the list this year?

Answer:

An avel may receive gifts given to workers because these gifts are considered as a part of their pay and not as a present. This would even include mishloach anos that is given to workers.

Best Wishes
