A 19 year old taking off Maaser

Question:

My 19 year old son that does not work he occasionally works once in a while a day here and there but no steady income gives maaser, I told him not to because he is not head of house hold and he works once in a while like 2-3 days a month. Does he have to give?

Answer:

If you provide him with his needs, then he should give maaser, because he isn’t considered poor. However if the reason he is working is in order for him to support himself, he wouldn’t have to give maaser. The fact that he is not the head of the household doesn’t really effect this, because everyone who earns money has to give maaser, and not only a head of the house.
