Question:
Can one use an oven for dairy if the oven is designated for meat?
1. Does it have to be double wrapped(also in general, what does double wrapped actually mean)?
2. Is just the pot with the lid on and then a piece of tinfoil between the pot and the grates enough to prevent reicha/zeia or any other problems?
3 if #2 is ok, how clean does the oven have to be?
4. Does the actual pot have to be wrapped?
5. 24 hours?
Thanks!
Answer:
As a general rule it is not a good idea to use an oven for meat and dairy, because mistakes and mix ups can happen. If the oven is clean of any meat pieces etc. (burnt on grease is not an issue for this as it will not give zeiah) and the pot is covered well, (not airtight but well enough that steam will not escape from the pot) then we are not afraid of zeiah. The pot will have to on some aluminum foil or something else to separate the pot from coming in contact with the milky rack, and make sure it doesn’t come in contact with the walls of the oven. If the pot is covered there is no need to have a double covering, if there is no dairy in the oven at that time. Under the above conditions, you don’t have to wait 24 hours.
