Brikat Hamazon, Kissing the bread

Question:

BS”D

Shalom my dear Rabbi,

Question: I heard someone say that when we brikat Hamazon must leave a piece of bread and kissing it in the middle of Brikat Hamazon, it is halakha? is truth?

Answer:

The idea of leaving a piece of bread on the table is brought in Shulchan Aruch O:CH 180-2. One of the reasons is so we can see the bread, because this is what we are thanking H-shem for. Another reason is, that when a person does the mitzvah of Birkas Hamazon it brings bracha from heaven in the merit of the mitzva, and there is a rule that blessing has to have a vessel in which it can attach itself and be placed. Therefore we leave some bread, which represents a person’s livelihood on the table. Regarding kissing the bread, I haven’t heard of that, maybe there are people that do it, but it is surely not an obligation.

Have a good Shabbos
