Question:
There is a person who is willing to pay me $50 a week for learning with him. Is this permitted, as one may not take money for Torah, as the Gemara in Nedarim 37 says? (This is at a time when I would otherwise be sleeping, early in the morning)
Answer:
The minhag nowadays is to take money for these things, because of sechar batala, which is that you could have been working during that time. It is true that you would otherwise be sleeping, nevertheless this is still the minhag. If you don’t want you don’t have to take the money.
