Stimulus Payment for a Yeshiva Bachur

Question:

My 18 year old son can theoretically apply for the $1200 Stimulus Payment that the American government is giving out this year in wake of corona. In 2019, we did not list him as a dependent. However, it says on the application: “Do not use this tool if you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.”
He is a yeshiva bachur and still supported by us.
Can he apply for the payment?
My (frum) accountant says that it’s legal.

Answer:

He can apply, especially now that your accountant told you that it is legal. The notice on the application just means that if you are claiming them on someone else’s return, don’t make a request for them.

Best wishes
