Bishul Questions

Question:

HI! If one wants to remove chulent directly from the crock pot (kli rishon) onto his plate on shabbos using a ladle,
1) How clean does the plate have to be from other foods?
2) If he wants a second helping of chulent, and some of his previous chulent is on the plate and cooled off, does he have to clean his plate before taking a second helping?
3) If the ladle is taken out of the crock pot and the chulent on it cools off, does the ladle need to be cleaned thoroughly before using it again?
Thank you!

Answer:

Before getting to your question, according to most poskim, you should not remove the cholent from the crock pot while it is directly over the fire. See https://dinonline.org/2020/07/14/taking-cholent-or-soup-from-a-pot-on-the-fire-on-shabbos/ . Rather remove the crock and either have someone else remove the cholent for you, or place it down on a counter while your hand is still holding on to it, (and preferably while your hand is supporting the pot’s weight). Then return the crock to it’s place, assuming that all the conditions of chazara have been met.

Regarding you questions.

  1. There are those that do this, but you don’t have to have to remove the crumbs on your plate when you put the cholent on to it.
  2. There is no need to clean off the leftover cholent from the first helping before putting the second one on it, because the leftover cholent has already been cooked, and a cooked liquid does not get recooked in a kli sheini.
  3. Since the ladle cooled down and now you are inserting it into a hot kli rishon, the ladle should be clean of any accumulation of cholent.

Best Wishes

1. Shulchan Shlomo 318 -37, he says that there is no need to be machmir so much because it is a minute amount which you don’t want to cook, additionally it is only if we say that cholent is considered a solid davar gush, and only if there is bishul after baking. Putting all these factors together, there is no need to be so machmir. Also see Dror Yikra pg. 382, in the name of R’ C. Kanievsky shlit”a that we are not machmir for this.
