What is the minimum amount of flour I need in order to take challah?

Question:

1. What is the minimum amount of flour I need in order to take challah with a brocha?
2. What is the range of amount I need to take challah without a brocha?
3. Is the above the same answer if I am making challah dough and yeast cake?

Thank you

Answer:

The amount of flour needed to take of challah is the same for challah dough, yeast cake cookies an anything else.

There are two different opinions at what point a ברכה  is said. According to one opinion (R’ C. Naeh[1]) it is at 1.66k (3.68lb or 3lb 11oz.) and according to the Chazon Ish it is 2.25kg. (4.96lb.). If one doesn’t have a scale to measure this amount are approximately 8 2/3 cups of sifted flour to take without a ברכה and 14 ¼ cups (R’ Ch Naeh) and 16 ½ (Chazon Ish) cups of sifted flour with[2] a ברכה.

All Poskim agree that one should separate חלה from a dough made from 1.2kg. (2.64 lb or 2 lb 10.3 oz.)

Best wishes
