Are diplomas, certificates of completion, certificates of licensure etc. and similar items muktzah?

Question:

Are diplomas, certificates of completion, certificates of licensure etc. and similar items muktzah?

Answer:

Yes they are muktza. The idea of muktza is that any item that is removed from the person’s intention to use on Shabbos, is not allowed to be moved. One type of muktza is muktza machams chisaron kis- items that a person doesn’t use (except for its intended use) out of fear that it will get ruined. Important documents, that a person wants to safe, is afraid of getting ruined. Most people would not just leave their diplomas laying around, because they don’t want it to get ruined. Therefore it is muktza. A person that indeed isn’t particular about his diplomas, his diplomas would only be considered a kli shemilachto l’issur, as with other shatrei hedyotos, (business related material).
