Din on Rosh Hashanah

Question:

This year Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos when we do not blow shofer. When is the din given, on Shabbos or on Sunday when we do blow shofer? Accordingly, we are not supposed to nap, usually on the 1st day, but we can on the 2nd dayץ Does that hold true for this year as well? כתיבה וחתימה טובה

Answer:

My understanding is that the there are two different levels of din on Rosh Hashana the first day is a stronger type of din, and the second day a softer one. It is brought in the seforim that the din is during the first three hours of the day, and for this reason a person should not daven mussaf b’ychidus during the first 3 hours of the day (Shulchan Aruch O:CH 591-8). While the din in a way is also when blowing shofar, it is not dependent on it, and the din is still there even if we don’t blow shofar. Additionally, there are poskim (Aruch Hashulchan 597-2) that the idea of not sleeping is only on the first day. Therefore, the second day this year will be the same as other years, and if you lay down on the second day after chatzos other years, you can also do so this this year.
