Is saying Shir Hama’alos considered a Hesech Hada’as

Question:

Hi! I have 2 questions regarding Hesech Hadaas
1) If I have a little bit of water in the kitchen, not enough to require a bracha achrona, then put the cup down and begin to walk out of the kitchen thinking I’m done, but as I’m leaving I realize I’m still thirsty. Do I need to make a new bracha rishona if I have more water?
2) I was told that on Shabbos, singing shir haamalos is not a hesech hadaas and one could drink more without a bracha rishona. Is this true? If it is can the Rav please explain why?
Thanks so much!

Answer:

Hello,

1) Once you decide that you are done drinking, this is a hesech hadaas and would require another beracha. However, if you planned on drinking more later, then you actually were not masiach daas and you would not be required to say another beracha. Additionally, if as you walked away you were subconsciously checking to see if you were still thirsty, this too would not be considered a hesech hadaas.

2) This is actually a machlokes. The sefer Beztal Chochma (6:68) explains per the gemara Berachos 42a that in order to need a new beracha rishona you need “hesech hadaas gamur” which is only acomplished through mayim achronim etc. Saying Shir Hamaalos is a step before and is not considered a “hesech hadaas gamur“. This is also the opinion of HaRav Fisher zatzal. Conversely, Rav Sheinberg’s opinion was that reciting Shir Hamaalos is considered a hesech hadaas and would require another beracha rishona.

All the best
