Posting music online

Question:

A couple of years ago when I was a teenager, i posted a couple of new jewish music albums online. They were removed after about a week. I feel very bad about this. What am I obligated to do? Am I chayav to pay?

Answer:

Although what was done was incorrect, you do not have an obligation to pay for what you did. The reason is because it is controversial if it is permitted to copy such music. Additionally, the owner will not be able to prove that people didn’t buy the albums specifically because of what you did. As it is probable that there were other places online that it could have been downloaded.

Best wishes
