Maaser and investment

Question:

If I own a portion of a property and gave a certain amount of my savings (let’s say 10k), when do I start paying maaser money? Do I wait to get back the 10k or do I pay maaser every time I get a check from that said investment?

Answer:

It depends on what kind of investment you made. If the investment is the type that you will eventually sell the property, and recover your principle, then the checks that you will receive at this point are profit and you should take ma’aser from them now. If it is the type of investment that you will not regain the original investment, then you haven’t gained anything until you first get back you 10k, and you will start giving masser only from then.

Best wishes
