I read somewhere that while one may not listen to dance music and other rousing, joyous music during the year of mourning (for my mother), listening to classical music is permitted. Is that true? I would like to listen to it; while it doesn’t bring me “joy” necessarily, it aids me as background music when I’m working, etv.

I am not aware of a difference between classical music and other music regarding avelius for a parent, as both of them do bring simcha. Regarding listening to music during aveilus in order to help you work, there are a number of poskim who say that it is permitted if it is done in order to help you work.
