Question:
We have a pigeon nest on our window. The mother laid eggs but then abandoned them. Are we allowed to get rid of the eggs and the nest without doing shiluach hakan?
Answer:
If the mother is there at night you would definitely want to do this rare mitzva that the Torah says will help you live longer (a heavenly life insurance policy). However if the mother indeed abandoned the eggs, which is not likely, and doesn’t return for a few days, you may get rid of the eggs.
