Sometimes before I go to sleep I like to read a bit and that helps me fall asleep. Is reading considered a hefsek if I already said hamapil?

Thank you for your question.
It is preferable that bracha of Hamapil be recited right before falling asleep, therefore it is better for you to say it after reading. If you are afraid that you will fall asleep in middle of reading then you can say it beforehand. Additionally, if you are reading divrei torah, then it is permitted even before you read, as it is no different than the pesukim that we read after the bracha.
