Baby naming at bris

Question:

My Jewish daughter and non Jewish son in law are having a baby boy. We are going to have a bris. The baby will be named for his jewish grandparents. Is it acceptable to add a third name for my son in laws mother who died when he was two? We want to be respectful to both families..
Thank You

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

The name that the child gets at his bris, which is the time when he receives (in part) his Jewish soul, shoud be exclusively a name after someone who was Jewish. You can be respectful to the other family by eiher giving them a differant honor, or if by giving the child another name not during the bris. This can be done simply by calling him that name as an “english name”.

Best wishes
