Does linas laylah include leeks. Also what to use to mix into onions etc, and the extent of it.

Question:

Regarding not leaving peeled onions, garlic, and eggs overnight, please kindly advise as follows:
1. Does this include leeks (without their roots)?
2. If the eggs, onion, garlic, etc are left overnight, how much of these needs to be covered in salt or oil? Does each and every piece have to be covered? Or smothered? In a big bowlful, if one shakes a bit of salt over them, how much salt has to be on each piece? (As a side note: it would rather spoil them, as they would end up too salty or too oily, and need a lot of washing off, and they would probably be quite flaccid in the case of salt use.)
3. What can be used to mix into the onion, garlic, egg, etc, besides salt and oil?
Thank you very much.

Answer:

  1. Leek does not have the same issue as onions do if they are kept out overnight. Chazal say that onions garlics and eggs are an issue, not anything else. Additionally, keel is not even called the same name as onions are. Leek is called karti, and onons are called batzel. Aas a side point, it might be helpful for you to know that even if the bottom of the onion is removed, as long as some of the outer peel is still unpeeled, the onion may be used.
  2. I am not aware of any specific percentage or amount of salt or oil that has to be mixed into the onions.
  3. The onions may be mixed with anything, and they do not specifically have to be mixed with salt. They can be mixed with sugar preservatives, other vegetables, as long as they are not by themselves.
