Can a person cry on shabbos?

Question:

Can a person cry on Shabbos from happiness?
Is there any basis for leniency to cry on Shabbos from sadness?

Answer:

The prohibition not to cry on Shabbos is not to be sad and pained on Shabbos. If the tears are from happiness, or from devotion wile one is davening, that it permitted. The issue with the crying is because on Shabbos we should not be sad, butthink of how lucky we are that Hashem, is with us and that eventually He will heal and take care of all our problems. There is a leniency however, that if the person is crying in order to release the pain, and the crying is going to make the person feel better, then according to some poskim it is permitted on Shabbos.

Best wishes
