Won’t be home for tonight’s lighting, what do I do?

Question:

I am going to Israel tonight and won’t be able to light because I will be in airport what should I do?

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

When you are traveling you can not light while you don’t have a “home” therefore lighting in the airport is not an option. Here are a few options that you can choose. If your wife or adult child is staying behind and can light for you, that is best. If you are leaving to the airport early, you can light from plag hamincha, however you should put enough oil in the cup that it will last until half an hour after tzeis hakochavim. If you don’t have any other option, then when you see someone else’s candles lit, you can say “Sheoso nissim la’avoseinu, and sheheciyanu, but then when you get to Eretz Yisroel you will not say shehechiyanu again, when you light the candles, because you already said it.

As a side point remember to say “al hanissim” in maariv, Shacharis etc.

Have a safe flight
