When I was in a short term rental with other guests, I entered a bathroom in which the sliding lock on the door did not align with the lock on the doorpost so I lifted up the door using the handle slightly which broke a piece of the handle, am I obligated to pay for this?

It is possible that you do have to pay for it. Additionally, it is not possible to say anything without first hearing the owners angle on this. The best thing is to discuss it in a straightforward manner with the owner of the apartment.
