Illness of a child

Question:

Rabbi, Can you send me information resources in the case of severe illness of a child changing that child’s name by another family adopting the child. I know that that was done in the past by community rabbis. I read something about it over 15 years ago.
Thank you

Answer:

 Thank you for your question.

Personally, I am not aware of any such custom, in fact something about it doesn’t make sense. The reason being because a child that is adopted is essentially still called as a child of the original parents (unless his parents name isn’t known, then we don’t have much of a choice). Besides, the idea of changing the person’s name is in order to change the mazal so that the person can get better. If the child will IY”H get better why would the parents give away the child to be adopted?

Best wishes
