Short Shmoneh Esrei

Question:

If davening mincha with tzibur and they do a short Shmone Esrei, can I start my Shmone Esrei with the Shatz and say kedusha together and then continue davening? The rest of the shul starts Shmone Esrei only after after kedusha

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

What you are suggesting is in fact the Sefardi way of doing a short Shmone Esrei. The chazan says the first 3 brachos out loud, and everyone says it quietly together with him. Then by kedusha everyone says it out loud. Then the chazzan continues to kadosh, and everyone says along with him quietly, and after that everyone daven the rest by themselves.

The Ashkenazi custom however is that the chazzan says the first three brachos out loud and everyone listens to it without saying anything, answers kedusha, and after the chazzan finishes ato kadosh, everyone else starts. If you are Ashkenazi it is preferable for you to do like everyone else. If however time is so pressed that there isn’t even time to chazaras hashatz in this manner then the whole Ashkenazi minyan can say all three brachos together with the chazzan.

It is noteworthy though that when saying the third bracha together with the chazzan, everyone says l’dor v’dor, word for word just like the chazzan.

It is also important to mention that a short tefilla like this should only be done in a pressing situation.

Best wishes
