Hi,
The sefer that will be used to read the parsha is taken out first, and given to the chazzan. Then the other sefer is taken out. When returning the seforim to the Aron Hakodesh, the chazzan takes the maftir sefer, and the person holding the first sefer goes after him, and the maftir sefer is put back first.
