Graduation gown with crosses

Question:

The graduation gown from Teachers College of Columbia University contains 2 King’s Crowns emblems – each has crosses on them. Is it permissible for a Jew to wear this?

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

Although it might be distasteful, it is permissible for a a Jew to wear this. The reason is because the cross on the top of the crown is not meant to be an ovoda zara, rather it is part of the design of the crown. Similar to designs of certain companies who symbol is a cross. Sine it isn’t meant to be an avoda zara it is permitted.

Best wishes
