Ato choinantonu and havdolo

Question:

If one forgot ato choinantonu and made havdolo al hakois but made a mistake in his havdolo which demands a new havdolo but only realized this mistake after he already drank the wine, does he have to daven she`moineh essreh again?

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

You do not have to daven another shemona esrei. The reason a person who forgot to say ato chonantonu and ate before saying havdalah is a knas, (fine) for being negligent about eating before havdalah even though he wasn’t careful to say the havdalah in shemona esrei. In your instance the person was careful to make havdalah, however he made a mistake, and now technically he has to recite it. This is considered like an “ones”, and therefore he would not have to recite shemona esrei again.

Best wishes
