y grandmother was named Zirel and I would like to know the background of the name. I know it was a common name yet I cannot locate anything in Hilchos Gittin in the lists of names there. Would you be able to clarify?
( I was thinking / suggesting and wonder if its connected to the old German word “zart” which means “tender” or “zierde” which means “splendid, daintily”)

While I can’t tell you the source of the name, it is mentioned in numerous seforim regarding names in Hilchos Gittin, see Mishmeres Shalom who says that it is brought in the Bach in (old) Teshuvos 81, Kitzur Nachlas Shiva, Bais Shemuel.
