Kohen visiting cemetery

Question:

Hi, I’m a kohen and I want to visit my dead relatives in the cemetery. Is it okay to go to the cemetery and stay on the path away from the graves or is it better not to go at all?

Answer:

Hello,

In general, kohanim do not go into a cemetery. There are certain cemeteries that have proper gates of fences around the graves in a way that permits kohanim some limited access, however this would have to be verified with the proper authorities, who are familiar with that cemetery or that part of the cemetery. Additionally, you have to be careful that there aren’t any trees hanging over the roads, inside or leading to the cemetery. But as already stated kohanim generally don’t go to cemeteries.

Best wishes
