טעות עכום for a public company

Question:

Hi,
I purchased an item from Macy’s, which is a publicly owned company and probably has Jewish shareholders. They accidentally charged me less than the actual price. Do I have to go out of my way to pay it back. Or since it is טעות עכום, can I keep the money?
Thank you.

Answer:

Hello,

You do not have to go out of your way to return the money. Even though there are Jewish stockholders, however the amount that each person is losing because of this mistake, (unless the mistake was for a tremendous amount of money) is minute, and it isn’t considered a loss to any of them. To explain, even if you were undercharged by $100, when it is divided among 300 million shares, each person’s “loss”, is minute, and you wouldn’t have to return it.

Best wishes
