Tachanun in a side room

Question:

Hi! If Mincha is davened in a side room of a shul, which is normally used for kids programs, where there are no Sifrei Torah or Seforim, only siddurim, do we put our head down?

Answer:

Hello,

We put our heads down during tachanun if the room has a sefer torah, or if the room is situated in a place where we can see the Aron Hakodesh from the room. For example, most women’s galleries are situated in a way that they can see the Aron Hakodesh, therefore when davening there one would put his head down during tachanun. Alternatively if it is at the time that the minyan is saying tachanun, even those who can’t see the Aron Hakodesh would put their heads down. Regarding your question, about the side room, tis would depend on the above stated conditions. If there is a window, or open door from where the Aron Hakodesh can be seen then they would put their heads down, however if they can’t see it from there, then they don’t, unless they are davening at the same time as the minyan in the shul.

  1. Follow up: In the case I was asking about, the regular shul mincha minyan needed to be moved to the side room because the sanctuary was being used for an event. Would the Halacha change in this case?
