Landlord didn’t put in enough lighting

Question:

Dear Rabbi,

My landlord promised to put lighting in the living room which was contingent upon us signing the contract. The unit was under construction so we didn’t have access or any input on said lighting. Once we got the apartment. The light that was put in is a spotlight and does not adequately light up the room. Is there any reponsibility on my landlords part to add more lighting?

Answer:

Hello,

It is hard to answer you on this because the word adequate, can be subjective, and an answer can’t be given without hearing the landlord’s side of the story. Without getting into a fight, I can suggest talking to the landlord and trying to work it out or try replacing the bulb with a stronger one.

Best wishes
