If your father tells you to do something, and your mother tells you not to do it who should you listen to?

The Gemorah says that if both father and mother ask something from a child, that the child should do his father’s bidding first. This is because the child’s mother also has to honor the father[1]. This is only a general rule; There are however some exceptions.
- If the parents are divorced, there is no priority of the father, as the mother is no longer obligated to honor her husband[2].
- If the mother’s request is for something that is a direct benefit to her, and the father’s request isn’t, the mother’s request should be done first. For example, if the father asks the son to show a guest, directions, and the mother asks that the son to buy her some food in the store[3].
