Date of aliyah of Yehoshua bin Nun im Bnei Yisroel

Question:

Shalom u’bvrakhah.

The shomronim seem to put the 1st aliyah of kol am yisroel at the 1. of elul marking start of their year counting nowadays. For us the forty days of repentance start.

Personally, I suspect, that the 1. of tishri could be the date of the fabrication the the egel zahav of Aharon. Of course, no rabbi would confirm this ;)

Loving to read some – at least regarding the subject – remark of you.

do you please?
Chodesh mevorakh.

Answer:

Hello,

According to the Jews, they entered Eretz Yisroel on the 10th of Nissan (see Joshua 4-19). This was at the end of thirty days of mourning for Moshe (see Deuteronomy 34-8). After the mourning period finished, Joshua told the Jews that in three more days they will enter the promised land. This is documented clearly in the above verse, and I don’t know where they get their calculation from.

Regarding the Date of the sin of the Golden calf, the Talmud (Taanit 26a) states that it happened on the 17th of Tammuz, which is 40 days after the giving of the Torah. Moshe was in Heaven getting the first Luchos, and when he came down, he saw that they made the Golden calf and then broke the luchos. This is one of the reasons we fast on the 17th of Tammuz. This is why you will not find any Rabbi to confirm that it was on 1 of Tishrei.

Best wishes
