Question:
Can one kasher something that needs libun, by using a self-clean oven which reaches a very high temperature?
When something is determined to need hagala , but this is not possible because of the large size of the object, can one use the self-clean oven?

- According to a number of poskim, including R’ Moshe Feinstein, and R’ Y. Kaminetsky zt”l, a self-cleaning oven (not continuous cleaning), reaches heat of libun chamur, (hot enough that sparks could come out of it).
- An item that needs hagalah, can also be koshered with “libun kal”, a light libun. Libin kal is accomplished when the oven etc. is heated to a degree that if a piece of paper would touch it, it would burn right away. A self-cleaning over reaches a lot high temperature than this therefore you can do this to such utensils. Just be aware that many utensils being koshered in a self- cleaning over may come out black, from the intense heat.
