Hachana on shabbos

Question:

I used someones apartment for Shabbos. Is it permissible to move things that were pushed out of place or utilized — to put them back Shabbos afternoon, so as to make it easier or not to forget after Shabbos. Putting a cup back in the specific place it was found or putting books back in the shelf? The reason it was done was because I thought of it at that second and maybe I would not think of it later or more that it was easy to know that I got that one small thing over with.

Answer:

Hello,

This sounds like you are preparing on Shabbos, in order to save yourself time and work after Shabbos. You should wait until after Shabbos to do these things. If you used the cup and right after using it, you put it back on the shelf in its correct place instead of just leaving it on the table, since this is the normal way things are used, then that would be permitted. Alternatively, if you are cleaning up in order that to make things neat for Shabbos, that would be permitted, but not plain cleaning up to save time after Shabbos.

Best wishes
