Please advise what is the Halacha for purchasing a Chanukah Menorah.
Do all candle/oil holders have to be in a straight line, or Shamash can be in front of the others?

Hello,
When purchasing a Chanukah menora the eight candle/oil holders should be in a straight line, and not in a circle, and not with some higher than the others. This is order that it shouldn’t look like one large fire. Although if the candles are spaced far from each other such as in a candelabra, technically it might be permitted, however it is preferred to light them specifically in a straight line, like the menora in the Bais Hamikdash.
On the other hand, the shamash should specifically be separated from the rest of the candles in order to show that it is not part of the candles, and so we won’t mistake which night it is. It is preferable that the shamash should be a longer candle or placed higher than the rest of the candles, so it can give more light than the rest of the candles (as we are not allowed to benefit from the light of the other candles).
