Shabbos and child

Question:

Hi Rabbi,

I think I might have transgressed Shabbos. If so, can you please tell me how I can repair it?

Over Shabbos, my daughter who is 4 years old, opened the freezer to get an ice pack and it started beeping. I said that “you left the freezer open” and she closed it. I think that unfortunately, I did have the intent that she should close it by that statement that I made.

The lights were switched off in the refrigerator prior to Shabbos, so I’m not sure about what kind of sensor is activated with the open freezer door.

Hello,

According to a number of poskim, since the child doesn’t know that his action is going to cause any melacha, and he doesn’t associate the two at all, (especially at age 4), then you didn’t do anything wrong by telling him to do this. You didn’t tell him to do melacha, you told him to do an action that is permitted, however it inevitably will cause another action to happen. According to a number of poskim this is permitted, since he is too young to understand the connection.
