Siman on Money

Question:

If one finds money, for example a ten dollar bill and a five dollar bill, or 15 singles, is the amount of money considered a siman, and I am talking about a case where there is a chance of finding the owner for example in a yeshiva? What about a gift card which is found, does it have a siman?

Answer:

Hello,

A person that finds money usually does not have to return it, because it usually does not have a siman. For example, a five or ten dollar bill doesn’t have a siman, since there are millions of them. Additionally we assume that the owner knows that the moey was lost, and was miyayesh from it, therefore there wouldn’t even be a need to hold ont0o the money, and it can be used.

If, however, the money does have a siman, such as fifteen dollar bills, then the money would have to be returned like any other lost object that has to be returned.

Regarding a gift card, it might depend on the type of card, its amount, how it looks, etc., but otherwise it most probably does not have a specific siman.

Best wishes
