Are crumbs on Shabbos table muktzah???

Question:

Is it allowed to sweep the crumbs (- crumbs; not sweet wrappers and shells etc which we know are muktzah) from the Shabbos table into one’s hands, these crumbs then to be taken to the bin (or recycling bin); or are the crumbs muktzah and therefore would have to be swept (eg, with a napkin) onto a plate and the plate then to be taken to pour the crumbs into the bin. Thank you.

Answer:

Hello,

After the Shabbos meal is finished the crumbs are no longer considered food, but garbage, therefore they are muktza. Therefore. they should not be moved directly with one’s hand, rather with a napkin, knife, brush. They should also not be brushed into one’s hand directly, rather into a napkin etc. It is noteworthy, that this only applies after the meal, because during the meal people still nosh a little on the crumbs, therefore they are still considered edible human food, and are not yet muktza.

Best wishes
