Good afternoon,
I don’t remember where I heard it, or if it I am even remembering correctly. But what is the source for the concept that someone can go to a crowded area, or near a well/source of water, and ask a question of Hashem. If he hears someone say “Yes, yes” or “No, no” then that is an answer from Heaven.

I have never heard of this.
There is a gemora that mentions something different than this, that a person who has a question if he should do something specific, and he hears a voice that is unusual, such as the voice of a woman when he is in the field or the voice of a man when he is in the city. If the voice repeats itself and says yes, yes or no, no, then that is a bas kol.
Having said this, I haven’t seen the big Rabbis and other learned people do this. It could very well be that nowadays we are not on the level to merit such divine revelations.
