Mezinka dance

Question:

Someone mentioned to me that the mezinka dance done when marry off the youngest child is goyish. Do you have any info on this?

Answer:

Hello,

Although there isn’t much written on the subject, Horav Y’ Zilberstein shlit”a does talk about it in Aleinu L’shabeach. He says that it is a minhag in Yerushalayim, that when the youngest child gets married, and all the man’s children are married that he dances by the chasuna with a broom. The reason for this minhag is because it says in Yeshayahu 14-23 (regarding Babel) “And I will sweep you out like a broom”, and chazal learn that it is referring to children dying. Since the father was zoche that he didn’t suffer from this curse, and married of all of his children, he takes the broom as way of praising Hashem for the chesed that He did for him.

Best wishes
