When to have an IUD inserted

Question:

When is the halachically best time to insert an IUD? During Shiva nekiim? Before the hefsek? After the mikva?

Answer:

Hello,

There isn’t any simple, smooth answer about when to do it, as there are a number of issues here. On the one hand putting it in usually causes some sort of bleeding. From inserting the IUD, it can cause scratching, and hormonally, because there is a foreign body inside her, it can cause a reaction for her to bleed. The best time to do it, halachically, and also medically, is right after she finishes her period, before making her hefsek. Regarding bedikos, and if she has spotting, etc., she should consult her local Rov.

It is important to note that it is very common for a woman to stain for a few months after inserting the IUD, and the couple should be prepared for it. It might help to call Tahareinu  in Israel at 072-224-2424,  for help on how to stop the staining.

There is no issue of her going to the mikva as far as chatzitza is concerned, since it is deep inside the body it isn’t considered a chatitza.

Best wishes
