Masser Money – Reduction in rent

Question:

Greetings,
I preface that I tried finding a previous shaila which may discuss but unsuccessful. I have an apartment which I rent out to relative of mine who is divorced. I am uncertain of the exact relative’s financial status if they can cover it or not, my impression is they are just making it. The monthly rental is below the going rate, am I able to deduct from the masser I take off?
Thanks

Answer:

Hello,

It is not possible for me to comment on the persons financial status, but if she doesn’t have enough money for her needs, you may give her tzedakah. Regarding the price of the rent, it is important to know, why you gave her this reduced price. If it is because she can’t afford more or because you anted to help her out, then you may calculate it as giving maaser, but if you gave her the cheaper price because she is relative, then not.

Best wishes
